
Mary E. Adams works in various media including clay, bronze, oil, watercolor and pastel. She began her study of art in Paris in 1972. Returning home to Savannah in the mid’70s, she studied oil painting with noted Georgia artist, Augusta Oelschig. She moved to New York in 1981 and for three and a half years studied drawing and painting at The Art Student’s League where she is a life member. During that time, she was involved in several Off Broadway theatre projects.
During the ‘80s, Ms. Adams had three showings in New York and six in the Savannah area. In 1983 she illustrated a book by Jonathan Stone and published by William Morrow & Company. In Savannah, she published limited edition prints of the original Polk’s Market in Savannah and the old public dock on the Back River at Tybee Island. She also wrote and illustrated children’s poems.
In the ‘90s, Ms. Adams co-founded Painter Ridge Publishers in Washington, CT which published watercolor cards, personalized writing papers and photographic art books. During that time she painted chiefly by commission and began her study of sculpture in the classic tradition of working from the figure.
Since then she has created sculptures in clay and limited edition bronzes. She has participated in numerous invitational showings. Her work is in private collections in Auckland, New Zealand, New York, Washington, DC, Boston, Hollywood, Savannah and Litchfield County, CT.
From 2006–2015 she was co-founder and co-publisher of Edible Nutmeg magazine.
Since 2013 she has taught sculpture at the Washington Art Association in Washington, CT.
Her works of sculpture are represented in the Low Country by Four Corners Gallery in Bluffton, SC.
